Product Overview

Molybdenum wire is manufactured from molybdenum metal through thermal processing, cold drawing, and surface treatment, producing fine metal filaments with diameters ranging from 0.02 mm to 12 mm. It is widely used in high-temperature and precision applications including EDM electrode wire, heating elements, filaments, and lead wires.

Chemical Properties

Acid/Alkali Resistance: Corrosion rate <0.001 mm·yr⁻¹ in 10% HCl or 5% NaOH solutions, essentially non-reactive

High-Temperature Oxidation: Begins oxidizing above 400°C with significant rate increase above 800°C; stable in vacuum or inert atmospheres (Ar, He) up to 2000°C

Seawater Environment: Superior pitting resistance compared to 316L stainless steel, suitable for marine engineering

Alloy Enhancement: Addition of rare earth (La₂O₃) or rhenium (Re) forms protective oxide layers, further inhibiting high-temperature oxidation

Manufacturing Process

Raw Materials: High-purity molybdenum powder (≥99.95%), with optional rare earth oxides or metal alloying elements

Forming: Powder metallurgy → Hot extrusion → Multi-pass cold drawing → Surface treatment (black or cleaned molybdenum)

Heat Treatment: Vacuum or hydrogen annealing (800-1200°C) to eliminate internal stress and enhance toughness

Quality Control:

Tensile strength and elongation (universal testing machine)

Surface roughness Ra ≤0.015 µm

Diameter and ovality (laser diameter gauge)

High-temperature oxidation/corrosion testing (10% HCl, argon protection)

Advantages of Molybdenum Wire

Extremely High Melting Point (≈2620°C), resistant to melting in high-temperature discharge or heat treatment environments

Excellent Electrical & Thermal Conductivity (≈18-20 MS·m⁻¹), ensuring discharge efficiency and uniform heating

High Tensile Strength ranging from 700-2300 MPa depending on diameter and alloying, significantly superior to traditional electrode materials like brass and copper

Low Thermal Expansion Coefficient (≈5.3×10⁻⁶ K⁻¹), minimal dimensional changes during thermal cycling for improved processing accuracy

Corrosion Resistance & Chemical Inertness: Virtually non-corrosive in non-oxidizing acids, alkalis, and most organic solvents; superior seawater pitting resistance compared to standard steels

Non-Magnetic Properties, suitable for MRI and aerospace electronics applications sensitive to magnetic fields

Alloying Capability (Mo-La, Mo-Re, Mo-Cu) for enhanced high-temperature strength, ductility, and creep resistance
